Statement on Pharmacists Professional Responsibilities |
|
In practising their profession pharmacists should make judgements and take action after consideration of what is in the best interests of the patient and in accordance with the law and the Code of Ethics of the Pharmaceutical Society of Western Australia. Such determinations will result from the exercise of professional knowledge and expertise, consideration of professional literature and other relevant information and taking into account the pharmacist's knowledge of the specific circumstances in particular cases. As independent professionals with a unique combination of knowledge and training pharmacists are responsible for professional acts and omissions and the outcomes thereof. Personal accountability is directly to the patient, and ethical and professional accountability to the Pharmaceutical Council of Western Australia. It is no defence to claim that another person, whether pharmacist, medical practitioner, other health professional or private individual, directed the pharmacist to act or omit to act, against the dictates of the pharmacist's professional judgement. |
